Work! Research indicates that test scores
are higher when the library staff gives library/information
to students. Collaborating with teachers is an important ingredient

library celebrates Banned Books Week with special displays, a Banned
Book Quiz and bibliographies of censored books for teachers and
staff. A special display is always added to our web page. |

Notice one of the winners is wearing his prize--
a library shirt! The student winners were: Eric M., Katie M.,

and Jill Taylor.

encourage reading, the library often spotlights books
that are recommended by American Library Association, American Association
of School Librarians and The Young Adult Library Services Association.

During
Teen Read Week, it was reported that some books
in the library
were keeping LHS students awake at night, wondering what evil
spirits were lurking in Lawrence, Kansas. Students chose their
Favorite Horror Books.
Students and staff visited the library to see the posters and
display of books. The word for the week was Eeeeeeeeeek

- Election - Presidential |
|
To
encourage interest in the election of the President of the United
States, links were updated on the LHS Library website. Also, the
page was created to support the government classes. To find information
about the issues, the candidates and the history of elections,
please consult websites
selected for Lawrence High School.

| What
books were made into movies? Here is a list
that was formulated to encourage reading! |
|
|
| The
library staff made ghosts from Tootsie Roll Pops for the faculty
and staff. The note said, "Don't be afraid to use your library."

NATIVE
AMERICAN MONTH 2004
"Native
Culture = National Treasure
Keeping it Alive and Well"
 |
A
slide show of
famous Native Americans was created to celebrate Native
American Month. To read more about the history of Native
Americans, students were encouraged to use the resources
of the LHS Library ...books and on-line databases. Links
to Native American History was updated.
Koty
Crowghost and Martha Oldham loaned artifacts for the display
near the cafeteria.

| During
the holidays, the library offered a Christmas Holiday Song
Quiz (thanks to LM-Net) to the faculty and staff. Charley
Lauts won a dinner for two at El Mezcal. |

| A
popular activity in the library is Student
Picks. Students pick their favorite books and put them on display
in the library. A banner distinguished them as a great read! Students
volunteer and usually there is a list of staff and students who
want to be a part of this project. |

It's
a Birthday...Kansas Day!
(For Kansas Day, the library staff updated the Kansas links)
On
January 29, 1861, Kansas was the 34th state
granted statehood. Did you know: 1.) The Sunflower is the state
flower 2.)The Honeybee is the state insect. 3.) The Cottonwood is
the state tree. 4.) The Western Meadowlark is the state bird 5.)
The Salamander is the state amphibian and 6.) The Box Turtle is
the state reptile. |

Happy
Valentine's Day!
The week of Valentine's Day, students were given "I am Loved"
Buttons. Buttons were donated by Helzberg Diamond. This project
was considered quite popular at LHS and many students are still
wearing their "I am loved" buttons on their jackets and
backpacks.
Also,
on Valentine's Day, bookmarks with Chocolate kisses and the saying
" You are the best chapter in my life' were given to the
LHS staff.

Students
enjoy seeing what their teachers read and what books they
choose as
their favorites. Student Picks
and Teacher Picks are the two popular
activities in the library.
|
|
 |
Books,
music and conversation filled the library. Mrs. Donnelly and the
advanced English 10 students had their annual Literary
Breakfast. Parents, friends and teachers were invited to the
event. Discussions of the student's journal and favorite books were
discussed. |

| North
Central Association's Final Visit |
| |
|
| In
2004, Lawrence High School had their final visit from the North
Central Association. For the past six years faculty and staff have
been implementing a school improvement plan that focuses on student
performance. The LHS Library's activities were included in many
of the plans of the committees. The slide
show is a celebration of our final visit. Enjoy! |

Puzzle
in the Library:
What
are the students doing in the library? They are working on a jigsaw
puzzle that has over 2000 interlocking pieces. What a great way
to relieve stress from class! Some students enjoy playing chess.

and Art Department |

|
| The
Lawrence High School choir and orchestra perform often in the rotunda
outside the library. The lovely sounds of music encircle library!
How inviting!
The Art Department fills our display case every month. Music +
Art + Libraries make a beautiful combination.

Day |
| |
| Always
a popular display in the library is the History Day Projects. Eleven
students placed 1st or 2nd at the State National History Day Contest
in Abilene. They will advance to the National Contest in Washington,
DC the week of June 12-16. |

Dr.
Stan Lombardo, Director of the Honors Program and classics professor
at KU spoke at the Lawrence High School Library on Thursday. Dr.
Lombardo began with a reading from his translation of The Iliad
and then engaged the 70 students present in a discussion of the
poem and the nuances of translation. He ended with a recitation
of the opening lines in Greek. The students, mostly sophomores in
Epic Tradition classes, appreciated the presentation and engaged
Dr. Lombardo with probing questions. Afterwards, Dr. Lombardo expressed
his delight with LHS students, calling them the best group he's
ever presented to. |

History Month |
| |
To
Celebrate Women's History Month, the library had a book
display and

the links
were updated for student's pleasure and information.

| Jazz
Appreciation Month |
| |
|
To
celebrate
Jazz Appreciation Month and Black History Month, the library created
a slide show to observe the rich
history of Kansas City Jazz. A bibliography
was created from our collection. The old record player was dusted
off and sweet sounds of jazz could be heard coming from the library.

| National
Library Week - Get Caught Reading |
| |
In
January, we started taking pictures for National Library Week.
The posters
were hung in the library hallway during National Library Week.
Individual bookmarks were made as companions to the posters. Comments
included "cool" and "Can I have one for my Mother?"
Get Caught Reading is a campaign to remind people how much fun
it is to read. The Campaign is supported by the Association of
American Publishers (AAP) and the Magazine Publishers of America
(MPA).

In
September, letters were sent to celebrities asking them what
their favorite books are. Replies were displayed in the case
that is located near the cafeteria. Also, Personal Best, a
booklet, was designed and printed for all students.

The faculty and staff were asked to bring their high school senior

The
library is the center for many activities. The following groups
have scheduled meetings in the Library: Teacher- staff development,
In-service, "What Ever It Takes" meetings, Book Club
Meetings, Spirit Squad Meetings, Site Council, Crisis Response
Team, Upward Bound, LGSA, Faculty Advisory Council, and North
Central Reading Committee meetings. Other activities include faculty
parties, testing, NLI signings, poetry readings, Debate Tournament,
Parent Teacher Conferences, LWV Board Meetings, P-Flag meetings,
CPR instruction, Retirement Party and the North Central Final
Visit.

librarians attended Tri-Conference in Overland Park.

| Arla
Jones, LHS librarian, received a grant from the Northeast Kansas
Library System to take five LHS students to the state library convention
in Overland Park. The girls had a great time and enjoyed all the
sessions that they attended. Could it be....five new professionals
in our field! Read Arla's comments

Teen Read Week.
"It's Alive @ your library
|
The
theme for 2004 Teen Read Week was horror. Lawrence High School
celebrated Teen Read Week
by making posters of students reading. One of the posters was
chosen and published in American
Libraries, the magazine of The American Library Association.
Lawrence High School's poster of Josh Bailey was featured. Josh
is reading Jeff Smith's Bone.

BEST
OF SHOW
The
Lawrence High School Library was selected as an honorable mention
for the The American Library Association/Library Administration
and Management Association 's 2005 Best of Show competition titled
Teen Read Week. The Best of Show Award recognizes
the very best public relations materials produced by libraries
in the past year. Here are the winning posters:
