LHS Graduate Kannon Shanmugan spoke to LHS students in the Library
"Kannon Shanmugan ranked first in his class at Lawrence High, Kannon was a valedictorian, editor of the school newspaper, captain of the Scholars’ Bowl team, and a section leader in the marching, concert, and symphonic bands. He was a Kansas Governor’s Scholar, a Kansas State Scholar, a National Merit Scholar, a member of the USA Today All-American Academic First Team, and a Presidential Scholar.

Entering Harvard at age 16, Kannon was editor-in-chief of the Harvard Independent. He was selected for Phi Beta Kappa his junior year. He served as an intern for United States Senator Bob Dole and the Honorable Deanell Reece Tacha, Judge of the U.S. Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Kannon studied Latin at Harvard and majored in classics,

graduating summa cum laude. He earned a Landon scholarship for law and public service, the Hoopes Prize for his senior honors thesis, and many other prestigious honors for his overall academic achievement.

Kannon attended Oxford in England, serving as editor of the college’s newspaper, earning his master’s degree, and studying Latin for two more years as a Marshall Scholar. Then he returned to Harvard, where he served as executive editor of the Harvard Law Review and assistant managing editor of the Harvard International Law Journal. Kannon graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1998.

Highlights of Kannon's career include serving as a law clerk for United States Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. He became an associate at the firm of Kirkland and Ellis where he worked primarily with former Judge and Solicitor General Kenneth Starr on a range of appellate matters, including matters before the Supreme Court. At present, Kannon serves as Assistant to the Solicitor General in the United States Department of Justice. He represents the United States before the Supreme Court. He has argued two cases before the High Court, most recently a case involving the question of whether a capital defendant has a constitutional right to rely on “residual doubt” at sentencing. Kannon has prepared the briefs for a number of significant cases before the High Court, including Arthur Anderson’s appeal for its conviction for obstruction of justice in connection with the collapse of Enron.

Kannon was recently named one of the “20 People to Watch” by Washingtonian Magazine. His speech today is titled "Serving the Public." ~ Daily Bulletin, August 31, 2006

Literary Breakfast

Mrs. Donnelly and her advanced English 10 students had their annual Literary Breakfast in the library. It was much more than that. Lawrence High School was showcased. The Art Department displayed students’ final projects and the sweet sounds of music filled the library. Mr. Patterson’s creative writing students displayed their best work.

For the breakfast, the English 10 students invited their parents, grandparents, friends and teachers to a morning full of food, art, music and a discussion of books. Students worked all semester on their Personal Literary Anthologies. They made detailed notes and did special projects after they read poems, short stories, essays, novels and nonfiction books. Each guest brought a piece of literature to share with the group and students discussed their journals. Discussions were fun and enlightening. The purpose of the anthologies is to broaden student interest in reading, writing, and reflect their personalities, interest and literary tastes.
