| Vera
worked as a secretary in the library from 1969 to 1997.
When you think of a LHS Lion
.you see Vera. She
cried when she heard the school song, her attire on
Fridays was always red and black, the students were
her extended family, and I don't believe she ever missed
a ball game. Her smile and quick wit made her a favorite
in the library. She had a soft spot for students in
need. Often she would spend her own money to buy a warm
winter coat for a student.
She
knew everyone in Lawrence, Kansas, their families,
and their life stories. If she did not know them,
they were new in town.
Not
only was Vera a colleague, she was my friend. One
year, she threw a surprise birthday party for me---I
never told her, but it was my first ever birthday
party. I will never forget it. She always brought
apple bread to Judy Sieg and Frances Holt at Christmas.
You would find Peanut Brittle in my Christmas sox.
It was Vera who mentioned the name, Debra Green, to
Dr. Tate when he was looking for a Math teacher. He
hired her after the first interview.
Her
family was most important to her. Her daughter, ViAnne
Abel taught at the Lawrence Alternative High School.
Doug Abel is her grandson. He works here at LHS.
Vera
Kanzig will be missed.
